While many people look forward to the 4th of July, our pets can often be left traumatized by it. The noise of fireworks is often extremely upsetting to both cats and dogs. Please think about your pet and its welfare before you bring it to a barbeque or have people over for a rowdy celebration. 9 Tips To Alleviate Fourth of July Fear

1. Don’t bring your cat or dog to any July 4th celebration.
While it may be fun for you, when the noisy fireworks start, it is extremely frightening for animals. Please leave them at home in a secure place. Many animals will panic and try to run away – so be sure that your home is secure and your pet is locked up.
2. Keep cats and dogs away from fireworks.
If you follow rule #1, then you should have no problem keeping fireworks away from pets. Never allow a pet around fireworks. They are dangerous and can harm your cat or dog. Many fireworks are poisonous to cat and dogs.
3. Keep lighters and matches away from cats and dogs.
Grilling is a popular pastime during the summer, and especially on July 4th. Matches and lighter fluid are toxic to pets if ingested or even inhaled. Don’t take the chance that your pet could eat or play with these items.
4. Never apply sunscreen or insect repellent to cats or dogs that isn’t specifically formulated for dogs and cats.
Human formulations of sunscreen and insect repellent can make your pet extremely ill. If the product contains DEET, your pet could suffer neurological problems.
5. Keep alcoholic beverages away from cats and dogs.
Alcohol can cause your pet to become intoxicated, severely depressed and ultimately lead to a coma. In severe cases, pets can die from respiratory failure. It is NEVER okay to give a pet an alcoholic beverage.
6. Never expose pets to citronella candles and insect oils.
These products can cause aspiration pneumonia when inhaled.
7. Glow sticks and necklaces should be out of the reach of pets.
The glowing material is not always toxic, but can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, especially if pieces of the plastic are ingested.
8. If pets are left at home without you…
Put your television or radio on to help drown out the noise of fireworks and add other background noise that might be more familiar to your pet!
9. Try a Thundershirt – Thundershirts are tight-fitting wraps that your pet can wear. The light pressure from the Thundershirt is like a hug and is said to calm pet’s anxiety.
All of these hazards can be avoided if you keep your cats (and dogs) in a secure area in your home away from these common holiday and summer hazards.
